Murphy President and Chief Executive Officer Better World Books “For Profit Social Enterprise: Building to Scale and Delivering Triple Bottom Line Results” David Murphy leads Better World Books, which considers social and environmental responsibility core to its business as an online bookseller. In addition to donating more than $1.4 million worth of books to promote literacy, the company has provided more than $6.5 million in funding to its nonprofit literacy partners working on four continents. It has also realized more than 9,000 tons of carbon offset through the carbon neutral shipping of books purchased from www.betterworldbooks.com. Murphy, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Dartmouth College, worked for 23 years in corporate finance, operations, and mergers and acquisitions for firms such as International Paper Company, The First Boston Corporation, and Hutchinson SA. He has also started several companies and served as CFO, COO, and CEO for both privately held and publicly traded firms in the manufacturing, health care services, and technology sectors. Murphy serves on the boards of directors for the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy and Indaba LLC, and he is also an advisory board member for Books for Africa, the Prison Book Program, Globe Funder, and Sprout Learn-n-Grow.
