In today's increasingly global economy, it is crucial to have, at the very least, a basic understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S. and currently represent about 14% of the total U.S. population, making it the largest minority group. The number of Hispanics in Georgia, Atlanta, and at Georgia Tech continues to rise every year. The Spanish and Portuguese languages are becoming more and more popular as have a variety of dances such as Salsa, Capoeira, Merengue and Tango, and foods such as paella, mangos, plantains, and "ropa vieja".
Hispanics are slowly but surely becoming better known in the American culture. For example, names of people in show business such as Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Antonio Banderas, Selena, and Shakira are well known by a large number of Americans. But Hispanics are also making progress in politics, science, and other aspects of life, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Whether you realize it or not, you are already living and working in a multicultural environment. Diversity is of keen importance to Georgia Tech and Hispanics play a key role in the Institute's efforts to increase and support diversity of its faculty, staff and student body.
The objective of the Cross-Cultural Journey: Hispanics? Latinos? Gringos? What are They all About? workshop is not to make you a cross cultural expert, which would be impossible to do in one hour. Rather, this dynamic workshop will:
- introduce the concepts of cross cultural training in a real world situation
- increase your knowledge of the Hispanic/Latino cultures and help you understand some of the differences in language, customs and culture
- help you to develop cultural proficiency relevant to the needs of those in the fields of science, education and business
- highlight some of the main similarities and differences between the American and the Hispanic/Latino cultures
- enable you to empathize with your Hispanic/Latino staff, co-workers, and students with whom you currently interact and/or will interact in the future
- teach you practical communication tools and help you develop interpersonal strategies to increase effective communication with people of other cultures
- develop a cross-cultural skill set for improving daily communications with your Hispanic counterparts in face-to-face contexts
- help you effectively interact with others that don't necessarily have the same customs.
