January 20, 2009
MAGE Training
Instructor: Jeff Clough
Rich Bldg Room ITDC Conf. Rm
9:30 am - 11:30 am
Cost: free
This training is geared toward the novice admin with sound computer skills and will familiarize the staff/faculty/student with procedures for handling the accounts, email addresses/aliases, and services of users within their sphere of administration, i.e. their department(s). All procedures for creating, provisioning, and managing accounts and working with email aliases will be discussed and demonstrated by the instructor and practiced by the students using MAGE's training database. Questions regarding their own unique environments are welcomed and encouraged.

ENROLLMENT: Your account must be provisioned for Mage training (which gives you access to the training database) before class, so we are not able to accommodate walk-ins.

WHAT TO BRING: A laptop with SecureCRT 6.x. If you need a Windows laptop to be provided for your use during class, please let the instructor know this when you sign up. SSH is the protocol used to sign on to the Mage administration machine and run Wand (the program Mage Admins use to interface with Mage). If you bring your own laptop, be sure that an SSH client is installed on it and that you are familiar with its configuration (if necessary) and operation. If you run Windows, SecureCRT 6.x is preferred (available from the OIT Software Distribution web site). If you run Mac OS X, Terminal.app is preferred (and is installed by default with your OS). If you run Linux, you might be asked to help the others get started with SSH during class.

TRAINING PREREQUISITES:

1) Completed MACTR form for the new admin. This authorizes us to provision the new Admin's account for Mage administration. There can be no training until this is done. The authorizing signature on this form must be that of someone who is over the whole department in question. For multiple departments, multiple signatures can be attached. Alternatively, if the organizational structure allows it, someone over all the desired departments can provide blanket authorization, one for each admin to be so authorized. (For example, GTRI currently has 49 departments registered in Mage, and they very understandably assigned all their Admins to work with all of them. So rather than run around and get 49 signatures, they would need only one from someone over all those departments.)

DO NOT BRING YOUR MACTR FORM TO CLASS. A MACTR form takes a bit of time to process. All forms must be submitted at least two (2) business days prior to your scheduled class. The form is available as a PDF link from http://share-it.gatech.edu/campus/mage-administrators. Return your form to Teri Russell (teri.russell@oit.gatech.edu, 5-3626, fax: 4-9548) or Jeff Clough (jeff.clough@oit.gatech.edu, 5-2344, fax: 4-9548).

You will be officially registered for class once your MACTR form has been received and processed. This is the actual provisioning of the administrative account for the new admin. We provision the account as requested and then mark the account as a trainee account. This sets the new admin up exactly as requested, but he can only access the training database, not the production database.

2) Have a way to SSH (secure shell) to mage.gatech.edu. On Mac OS X and on Linux, this is built into the operating system. For Windows, we suggest the latest version of SecureCRT 6.x, which is available for download from http://software.oit.gatech.edu/. SSH is the only way to talk to Mage, so don't come to class without it.

3) All students must be able to sign on to LAWN for network access.
