Founder, GREENGUARD Environmental Institute

Marilyn S. Black directs all scientific studies for AQS. A leading expert in characterizing indoor air pollutants and their sources for more than 18 years, she focuses on working with manufacturers in the design and qualification of low-emitting products.
Black has directed numerous research projects sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and private industry.
She pioneered the research and development of environmental chamber technology for measuring Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions from construction materials and furnishings, and she has directed numerous projects involving chemical emissions from building materials, furnishings, and processes.
Black also founded GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI), an industry-independent, nonprofit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings.
Black holds a BS from the University of Virginia, an MS from the University of Florida, and a PhD from Georgia Tech, all in chemistry.
She will be introduced by mechanical engineering student Scott Bandy.
The IMPACT Speaker Series is sponsored by the Institute for Leadership and Entrepreneurship and is free and open to the public.
