Micro-Inequities (The Power of Small Slights)
During this interactive workshop,participants will become more aware of the significant impact their words and actions (as well the “little things” they intentionally or unintentionally do) have on other people, begin dealing with micro-inequities in a forum where they are safely brought to the forefront for discussion, and develop skills/strategies to send more constructive messages, and respond more effectively to negative messaging that can undermine their success.

Creating your I3 Toolbox: A Workshop Examining Identities, Intersections, and Inclusion
Intersectionality allows us to recognize and understand that people have multiple, layered identities derived from personal and social relationships, history, and systems of power. People belong to many communities at the same time, and as a result, experience both privilege and oppression simultaneously. Using interactive discussion and activities we will explore the ways that privilege and oppression operate in our personal and professional lives. Together we will identify intersectional approaches to leadership, advocacy, programming, and interactions with one another that will strengthen our work and contribute to creating a more inclusive Georgia Tech community.

This program will introduce student leaders to the concept of social justice, diversity and difference at Georgia Tech. Students will begin first by learning the main areas of difference recognized by the Institute. Additionally, they will examine their own identity, dominate and subordinate identities and socialized behavior in relation to difference. Students will then consider why social justice is important for establishing and supporting a vibrant and healthy community at the Institute and beyond. Microaggressions are brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain populations. These exchanges are often subtle in nature, and can be manifested in the verbal, nonverbal, visual, or behavioral realm and are often enacted automatically or unconsciously.

Panelists will explore the evolution and classes of microaggressions. In addition the dynamics, dilemmas, and implications of these demeaning behaviors will be explored.

* A keynote address by Tim Wise on Thursday, November 11 , 2010 at 7:30 PM at the College of Management LeCraw Auditorium. Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers, speakers and educators in the United States.

* A book discussion and documentary on Stieg Larrson's, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

* A lecture by GT faculty member, Dr. John McDonald and his research team's Findings on Ovarian Cancer. Please note this research is being conducted on our campus and is very cutting edge.

* A lecture by Marisela Martinez on, "Dangerous Distortions: A Comparison of the ways African Americans, Latinos and Asians are Misrepresented in the Media ".

* A workshop on Indian Culture and learning how to pronounce Indian names. Dr. Han Zhan will be conducting a workshop on, "Dissecting the Rise of China".

* A Corporate Panel (Deloitte, Caterpillar, Proctor and Gamble and GT) Focusing on the Effects of Microaggressions in the Workplace. Human Subject Research Compliance Training

The Office of Research Compliance provides training resources for those conducting human subjects research. Completion of online modules (linked from www.compliance.gatech.edu) is required, as is advance review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Researchers who will possess or access personally identifiable health information (PHI) need to be aware of recently heightened HIPAA federal regulations and new penalties for improper disclosure. They will need to complete the module, “Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) for Biomedical Research Investigators.” Presentations and workshops on protecting human subjects are available through the Office of Research Compliance. CultureFest is once again proud to present the International Food Fair. The Food Fair an old Tech tradition during which Tech students, faculty and staff have an opportunity to treat their taste buds to a variety of delicious cuisines.

More than 12 different cultural and ethnic organizations will be participating in the Food Fair by providing food dishes that represent their country or ethnicity. Therefore the Food Fair is a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of cuisines at one place at just a minimal entry cost of $5.

AIESEC's Global Village is an international event involving on-campus multicultural organizations creating booths to represent a country, with international food, clothes, presentations, performances, games and crafts. Occuring at the same time an location as the Food Fair, the Global Village will offer booths and showcase the international internships AIESEC offers, which are now open to campus

This year Culture Tech launches a new event called the Language Lunch. This event is schedule to take place on Tuesday during lunch when different cultural organizations showcase thier language at a kiosk along Skiles Walkway. Along with the assistance of students at the Georgia Tech Language Institute, Cultural Clubs will share a sample of conversational basics in different languages. This serves as a great recruitment opportunity for every club and fosters better communication with the students around campus.

The International Film Series during the week of Culture Fest will showcase a collection from across the globe. It will be held from Monday, April 5 to Friday, April 9 in the Student Center Theatre (across from Pizz Hut) or the Cleary Student Success Center Theater at Georgia Tech. Films will be shown each afternoon. The films will be selected based on their ability to illuminate the intricacies of a particular culture and elucidate the importance of the integration of language in that culture.

These evenings are intended to celebrate and explore the culturally diverse student body at Georgia Tech and its surrounding community in an effort to highlight the human characteristics that we all share.

Sponsored by the Taiwanese American Student Association (TASA) at Georgia Tec, the event will be hosted at the Georgia Tech Biotech Quad (with the IBB, Whitaker, Ford, and MS&E buildings) on Friday night, April 9, 2010 from 7-10 PM.

Night Market is meant to simulate a real-life night market as found in Taiwan. In this event, each organization will set up a booth with 1-2 tables and sell a food, activity, and/or trinkets meant to showcase their culture. Selling will be done using a ticket system instead of direct cash. At the end of the night, the number of tickets collected by each organization will be counted and exchanged for cash.

Georgia Tech's third annual GT Campaign for EveryBody Week, formerly Body Image Awareness Month, will be held February 22-26. During this week men and women will have the opportunity to examine perceptions and attitudes related to body image and participate in discussions on body image issues on-campus. Being a friend to someone with an eating disorder can sometimes be very challenging. Often we struggle with what to say or know what the best support methods might be. Join us for a workshop on tips and strategies to help a friend struggling with disordered eating. This program is sponsored by Go T.E.C.H.

Eve Ensler is an internationally acclaimed playwright whose work you might know best from The Vagina Monologues. The Good Body is an inside look at the outside. Body Mod Blog: Launched on February 22

This blog will expose GT students to the positive and negative effects of body modification on body image. It will also give students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to share their personal experiences with body modification.

GT Body Peace Treaty: Relaunched on February 22

The GT Body Peace Treaty encourages positive self-image among GT students. It includes self-affirming personal statements to help students feel good about themselves. Women and men can sign the GT Body Peace Treaty by joining a Facebook group.

Some of the equipment available:

* Digital Cameras (2 day out of building use)

Point and shoot type Canon Powershot SD410 (4 megapixel) and Powershot SD1000 (7 megapixel). The cameras come complete with a flash storage card, case, USB cable, manual and a battery charger. Overdue fines for general circulation are $5.00 per day.

The Library also has several short-term loan cameras available for those who need to take a few quick shots. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for details and availability.

* MiniDV Camcorders (1 week out of the building use)

Canon ZR 40, ZR 100, and ZR 850 MiniDV camcorders. They come complete with a case, firewire/USB cable, video input cable, manual and a power cord/adapter. Mini DV tapes are not included but are required for operation. Tapes may be purchased for $5.00 at the Circulation desk. The ZR 850 camcorders may be reserved, while the ZR 40 and ZR 100 offerings are available on a first come, first served basis. Overdue fines for all camcorders in general circulation are $5.00 per day.

They also reserved a line of higher quality Panasonic PV-GS380 MiniDV Camcorders for class video production use. They may be reserved in advance by the instructor. For questions and reservations, contact Joey Fones in the Circulation Department.

* Film/Slide Scanning Adapters

Nikon film/slide adapters and Epson photo scanning templates (each template set has 3 plates). These are scanning supplies for digitizing 35mm and 120/220 film and slides.

* GorillaPods (24 hour out of building use)

Similar to a mini-tripod, the gorillapods have flexible yet strong joints that allow you to use it on uneven surfaces, or even to wrap it around objects. It has a standard attachment that fits most cameras and camcorders.

* Headsets

Behind-the-head style with adjustable microphone and in-line volume controls.

* Multi-Card Media Reader

Dazzle USB Media Card Reader with USB 2.0 connection. This item can read many different formats of Flash media commonly used in digital cameras.

* Peripheral Cables

They have a line of USB and Firewire peripheral cables to help you manage your cameras, camcorders, and other devices. They are gold plated and provide exceptional transfer rates.

* Tripods (24 hour out of building use)

Standard tripods for most any camera or camcorder.

* Cassette Player (2 hour in-building use)

Emerson cassette tape player is available at the Circulation Desk.

* Digital Voice Recorders (4 hour out of building use)

Olympus VN-3100 PC with 72 hour recording time. The uplink cable, software and instruction guides are all included. The Software and driver must be installed to extract the .wav files from the device though you can use a Library Laptop if necessary. Audacity MP3 conversion software can be downloaded for free.

* Laptops

Dell Latitude Laptops with wireless internet. Power cords/adapters are available as a separate checkout. One renewal is allowed, based on availability. For information on software offerings - View the Software List.

DVD Burner with USB 2.0 connection. All necessary the software, drivers, connection cable and a user guide are included.

The Ally level training provides an introduction to the problem of sexual violence, a brief overview of advocacy and response at Georgia Tech, and a foundation of basic information needed to continue in the Advocacy Training and Volunteer Program. Through discussions and scenarios, we will explore concepts such as consent, power and control, bias, and the Georgia Tech Policy on Sexual Harassment and Misconduct. You will also learn about options for continuing education and involvement with the VOICE Initiative to address and end sexual violence in the GT community.

In December 2009, Outdoor Recreation at Georgia Tech (ORGT) will offer its first international Eco-Adventure to Costa Rica! Known for its variety of outdoor opportunities and its exotic wildlife, Costa Rica is the perfect location for an adventure vacation. From coastal kayaking off the beach of Manuel Antonio to canyoneering and a jungle canopy tour, this trip has it all! Activities will include:

* Class III-IV Whitewater River Rafting
* Canyoneering
* Hiking through the Rainforest
* Coastal Kayak Touring
* Jungle Canopy Tour
* Snorkeling
* Adventure Education

While exploring, trip members will experience full cultural immersion with local Costa Ricans, highlighted by living and working closely with a family on a local, organic farm. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy, explore and engross themselves in the Costa Rican way of life.

Online sign-up begins on Monday, August 17, 2009. There will be a mandatory, pre-departure training session to prepare for the physical rigors of the trip, especially the challenging hikes through the rainforest.

ORGT has partnered with “Go Green Adventure Company” to create a trip which lessens the negative impact of travelers on the environment. Mindful of vulnerable areas, trip leaders will plan activities in designated locations to reduce harm to the local habitat; but our efforts to protect the environment do not stop there. A portion of the funds from this trip will subsidize efforts to plant trees, rescue sea turtles, and build communities in Costa Rica.

The Ivan Allen College's School of Literature, Communication and Culture welcomes poets Bruce Weigl and Kevin Pilkington to read from their collected works as part of LCC's Poetry at Tech lecture series.

Kevin Pilkington is a member of the writing faculty at Sarah Lawrence College and teaches a workshop in the graduate department at Manhattanville College. His poems and reviews have appeared in numerous magazines including: Poetry, Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Boston Review, Yankee, Hayden's Ferry, Columbia, Greensboro Review, North American Review, Gulf Coast, Valparaiso Review.

Bruce Weigl is a distinguished professor at Lorain County Community College. Weigl additionally served as the president of the Associated Writing Programs. His poems are featured in American Alphabets: 25 Contemporary Poets (2006) and many other anthologies.

Founded by former Microsoft executive John Wood, Room to Read is a nonprofit organization working to provide educational opportunities throughout the developing world. Forty-two percent of girls in developing countries are not enrolled in school. The Girl’s Education Program was established to combat this by providing the support girls need to enroll and remain in school.

Emily Leys joined Room to Read six years ago as the third member of its growing Global office team. Leys holds a bachelor's degree in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a master's degree in South African and African politics from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of a nonprofit called Ecology Project International. Leys has spent the last 12 years focusing on global political and social issues. Her greatest passion may be gender equality, but she is striving to create a world where all children have access to an education.

Management major Nancy Bota will introduce the speaker.

The ability or inability to pronounce someone’s name can affect the creation of meaningful relationships. We have many people of Chinese decent on this campus, but many members of our community do not know how to pronounce Chinese surnames. This practical workshop will foster culturally responsive communication.

Paul B. Foster holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures specializing in is the study of Lu Xun, the icon of Modern Chinese Literature. He is the author of Ah Q Archaeology: Lu Xun, Ah Q, Ah Q Progeny and the National Character Discourse in Twentieth Century China (Lexington Press, 2006). In addition, he designed, developed and alternately co-directs the School of Modern Languages' intensive summer Chinese language program in Shanghai, China LBAT.

Following this educational session, female participants will be given a first-hand opportunity to wear the headscarf in public for 2 days while writing about their experiences in a personal journal. We will reconvene to share our experiences, understandings and perceptions (refer to November 12). The goal is to identify our learning points of cultural awareness with regards to the Muslim woman’s choice of wearing the headscarf, while also creating an environment for non-Muslims to educate others about the Hijab. You can gain access to a new language and culture while having fun! American Sign Language is the language of the Deaf community, created by and for Deaf people. American Sign Language is a language with its’ own syntax, structure, and grammar. Sheryl holds both a Certificate in American Sign Language and an Associate of Science Degree in Interpreter Training. In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech - Communication Disorders with a minor in Linguistics and a Masters Degree in Education - Deaf Education, both from Georgia State University. She is a certified teacher for the deaf.

A representative of the High Museum of Art will discuss the current exhibit Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius.

About the Exhibit
Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius features approximately 50 works, including more than 20 sketches and studies by Leonardo, some of which will be on view in the United States for the first time.

Through an examination of the sculpture that Leonardo studied, the drawings he created for his own sculptural projects (the majority of which were never realized) and his interactions with other Renaissance sculptors, the exhibition sheds new light on Leonardo's seminal role in the development of Renaissance sculpture and the work of artists who followed him.

The exhibition comprises three major areas:

Leonardo, Sculptor
This area features drawings associated with Leonardo's plans for works in sculpture, including an in-depth examination of his plan to create the world's largest and most complex statue, commonly referred to as the Sforza Horse. A 26-foot-high re-creation of this monument will be on display in the Sifly Piazza at the Museum.

Leonardo, Student
The second section examines the artist's wide-ranging interest in sculpture by pairing his own sketches with existing sculptural works by his influential contemporaries, including his mentor Andrea del Verrocchio. Donatello's famous Bearded Prophet, which has never been seen outside of Florence, Italy, was restored in preparation for Leonardo da Vinci: Hand of the Genius and will be included in this part of the exhibition.

The exhibition concludes with Leonardo's influence on a younger generation of artists including Peter Paul Rubens and Giovan Francesco Rustici. Rustici's three larger-than-life-size bronze figures that compose John the Baptist Preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee (another outstanding work that has never traveled outside of Florence) will close out the show, examining a friendship and influence shared between the two artists.

Professor of Management Practice, Harvard Business School, and Author, 7 Lessons for Leading in Crisis

Bill George is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School, where he has taught leadership since 2004. He is the author of several best-selling books, including True North, Finding Your True North, and Authentic Leadership. His latest is 7 Lessons for Leading in Crisis.

He is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Medtronic. He joined Medtronic in 1989 as president and chief operating officer, was chief executive officer from 1991-2001, and chairman of the board from 1996 to 2002. Under his leadership, Medtronic's market capitalization grew from $1.1 billion to $60 billion, averaging 35 percent per year.

He has been named one of Top 25 Business Leaders of the Past 25 Years by PBS; Executive of the Year (2001) by the Academy of Management; and Director of the Year (2001-02) by the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Dr. Canton is a renowned global futurist, social scientist, keynote presenter, author and visionary business advisor. For over 30 years, he has been predicting the key trends that have shaped our world. It is only fitting that we would have him join us and we work to plan Georgia Tech's future for the next 25. He will speak for one hour and then open it up to questions and discussion.

Among Dr. Canton's books is The Extreme Future: The Top Trends that Will Reshape the World in the 21^st Century. He is CEO and Chairman of the Institute for Global Futures, a leading think tank that he founded in 1990. I finally got the opportunity to eat here! For an $8.50 lunch, it is all you can eat breakfast food, Mexican Bar, fast burgers and fries (and the likes), salad, dessert, drinks. Other things I observed: it was clean and well-lighted, lots of tables and space, big televisions to watch (read: avoid books and laptop).

This all brought back memories of being a college student. Didn't we all meet around food?

Journal/Reflection: What Should I Do With My Life?

Once again, I have the privilege of teaching a section of GT1000 (Freshman Seminar). As part of the GT1000 experience, we ask the students to keep a journal so that they may reflect on what they are learning. Below is the first journal assignment for my class. Since Tech is going through our strategic plan as an organization (President Peterson has asked us to consider what "we want Georgia Tech to look like in 25 years"), I thought that this same journal/reflection assignment would be beneficial for more than just Freshmen.

You do not have to turn in this "Assignment" (the students do!), but I encourage you to take a few minutes and read these articles and see how you might apply them to your work here at Tech and to your life in general. I'd love to hear what you think (and also, if you have any good ideas for journal/reflection questions for our students). I also encourage you to get involved with the Georgia Tech strategic planning process, starting with the President's Investiture on September 3rd.

Journal Assignment

Part 1
Read Po Bronson’s articles “What Should I Do With My Life? The real meaning of success -- and how to find it.” (Fast Company, Issue 66, January 2006, pg 69) and the follow-up "What Should I Do With My Life, Now?" (Fast Company, January 13, 2009)

Po Bronson states:

“Most of us don't get epiphanies. We only get a whisper -- a faint urge. That's it. That's the call. It's up to you to do the work of discovery, to connect it to an answer. Of course, there's never a single right answer. At some point, it feels right enough that you choose, and the energy formerly spent casting about is now devoted to making your choice fruitful.”

Have you heard a whisper? Do you have any ideas yet on what answer is right for you right now?

Part 2 -- Life List/Goals

Create a life list. Write down 10-42 places to go, things to do, skills to acquire, and/or people to meet. Do not limit yourself to short-term goals. Think about the things that you want to accomplish throughout your life.

How can you use your time and resources while here at Georgia Tech help you to reach some of these goals?

Georgia Tech News: Leadership Development for Faculty, Staff Announced

Atlanta (August 27, 2009) — The Board of Regents has announced a new Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) program for high-potential faculty and staff in senior management positions.

The University System of Georgia has created a new Executive Leadership Institute program for faculty and staff in senior management positions.

The program will provide 100 contact hours over 7 months, focused on leadership development. Program segments include: identifying and developing leadership strengths; self-assessment; 360-degree feedback; mentoring; job shadowing; and exposure to peers and leaders across the system.

The program is open to faculty and staff members at or above the level of executive director (or equivalent). Applications are available online and are due no later than 5 p.m., Sept. 8. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, and one faculty and one staff member will be selected for participation in the process.

With the exception of travel costs, the Board of Regents will underwrite all program expenses. This is a good opportunity to provide high-level training at low expense for exceptional faculty and staff who can commit the time to the program.

David Murphy leads Better World Books, which considers social and environmental responsibility core to its business as an online bookseller.

In addition to donating more than $1.4 million worth of books to promote literacy, the company has provided more than $6.5 million in funding to its nonprofit literacy partners working on four continents. It has also realized more than 9,000 tons of carbon offset through the carbon neutral shipping of books purchased from www.betterworldbooks.com.

Murphy, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Dartmouth College, worked for 23 years in corporate finance, operations, and mergers and acquisitions for firms such as International Paper Company, The First Boston Corporation, and Hutchinson SA.

He has also started several companies and served as CFO, COO, and CEO for both privately held and publicly traded firms in the manufacturing, health care services, and technology sectors.

Murphy serves on the boards of directors for the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy and Indaba LLC, and he is also an advisory board member for Books for Africa, the Prison Book Program, Globe Funder, and Sprout Learn-n-Grow.

Management major Jordan Garner will introduce Murphy.
